The city's continuous dedication to creativity and innovation is exemplified through the Irving Innovation Project. This is evident through the implementation of ideas submitted through the Innovation Hub and the issuance of grants directed toward innovative pursuits. The Irving Innovation Hub provides a forum that allows employees to submit suggestions that they feel can make a meaningful impact on our community.
Irving 360⁰ Civic Academy
The Irving 360⁰ Civic Academy was launched in September 2017. The purpose of this is to inform residents of services provided by the city, encourage participants to become involved in city matters, and to engage and develop relationships with diverse members of the community. The 360⁰ Civic Academy also allows participants to understand the major operations of city departments, the decisions council and staff must make, and allows them the opportunity to communicate this knowledge with other residents.
IrvingLIST was launched in April 2018 and allows departments to re-purpose and exchange items without incurring the costs associated with a new purchase. This grants a department the ability to post their surplus items on INET to trade with other departments.
Holiday Open House
Addressing community outreach, a Holiday Open House was launched in December 2017 and is held in conjunction with the city's holiday programming. This provides an opportunity for two-way interaction between city staff and residents while waiting in a warm place for the tree lighting to begin.
Through the Irving Innovation Project, grants worth up to $25,000 are available to all city departments for innovative projects with potential to improve city services or deliver a positive, meaningful impact on the community. These grants provide the following:
Trail Usage Counter
Grant funds were awarded for the purchase and installation of counters along Campion Trail. This technology allows the city to receive accurate, real-time data using motion and speed to determine the type of movement along the trail. The trail-usage data assists the Parks and Recreation Department to manage maintenance schedules, security needs and event programming. The enhanced data also drives the focus of future trail improvements, as well as provide a safe, maintained trail system.
Unmanned Aircraft System
Funds were awarded to purchase a small, unmanned drone system. The aircraft provides a bird’s-eye view of live, actionable data for first responders. Drones are an efficient and effective life-saving tool for first responders. The technology helps emergency personnel:
- Assist in active shooter situations
- Direct firefighting efforts
- Document crime scenes
- Inspect critical infrastructure
- Reconstruct accidents
- Search for missing persons
- Search for violent suspects
